How to compare SSDs

Two SSDs that look alike can differ a lot in speed, endurance and price. This page lists every drive we track with a current offer in one table, so you can compare them on the same footing. Value is an optional ranking for weighing price against the capacity and performance you need.

Compare capacity and interface

Pick the capacity you need and the interface your computer supports, such as M.2 NVMe or SATA, then compare drives within it. Value never rewards terabytes you did not ask for.

Compare speed and endurance

Sequential read and write speeds, rated endurance (TBW), DRAM cache and NAND type sit in one table, so two drives that look alike can be told apart.

Check current SSD prices

Each row shows the cheapest current new offer and how many retailers carry the drive. Open a row to compare retailers, or add the refurbished and used offers we track.

Use Value within the capacity you actually need

Value weighs price against speed and endurance for the capacity you filtered to. Pick a use case or set the weights yourself, or leave priorities off to compare on price alone.

From the market to a shortlist

  1. Filter the market

Set your budget, capacity, interface and form factor. Every filter shows how many are left.

  2. Compare specifications and performance

Sort by speed, endurance or price and read the grade for your use case. Switch on priorities if you want Value to rank the list.

  3. Save or compare candidates

Add products to the comparison to see them side by side, or save them to come back to later.

  4. Check current offers

Open a product's offers to compare retailers. Click any price to test an offer you were given against the same market.

Questions about comparing SSDs

What should I compare between SSDs?

Make sure the form factor and interface fit your computer, choose the capacity you need, then compare speed, rated endurance (TBW), DRAM cache and the current price.

NVMe or SATA?

NVMe drives connect over PCIe and are much faster in sequential transfers; SATA drives are slower but work in older computers and 2.5-inch bays. Which one you can use depends on your slots (an M.2 slot has to support NVMe), and for everyday use the difference is smaller than the spec sheet suggests.

What do SSD speed figures mean?

Sequential read and write speeds are the manufacturer’s rated maximums for large files. Everyday responsiveness depends more on the interface, the controller and whether the drive has a DRAM cache, which is why those are listed too.

What is TBW?

Terabytes written: the amount of data the manufacturer rates the drive to write over its warranty. Higher means more endurance; for most home use even modest ratings last many years.

Will this drive fit my computer?

Check the form factor and the interface: an M.2 NVMe drive needs an M.2 slot that supports NVMe, a 2.5-inch SATA drive needs a SATA port and a bay. Filter by both to see only drives that fit.

How often are SSD prices updated?

Offers are refreshed as market snapshots; each offer shows when it was checked. Retail prices can change at any time, so confirm the final price on the retailer's site before buying.

What does the Value score mean?

Value is a relative score from 0 to 100 under the priorities you choose. Each weighted factor (performance, price, endurance and so on) is compared with the rest of this market, the factors are combined, and the best result in the current view scores 100. Turn priorities off to browse by price alone.
