What matters for a fast system and boot drive
For an OS and boot drive, real-world feel is set less by sequential peaks and more by random I/O and a DRAM cache that keeps the mapping tables off the NAND. PCIe Gen4 is the value sweet spot — Gen5 drives carry a price and heat premium that desktop use rarely justifies. Endurance (TBW) and warranty separate otherwise-identical drives at the same price.
- Random I/O
- Boot times and app launches track random reads, not the marketing sequential number.
- DRAM cache
- DRAM-less drives are fine as game shelves, but the OS drive deserves the cache.
- TBW & warranty
- At equal speed and price, take the higher endurance and longer warranty — it's free risk reduction.
- Gen4 sweet spot
- Gen5 sequential peaks rarely change desktop feel; pay for them only with a specific workload.
Check for yourself
- Check your slot first: Interface and Form factor must match the M.2 slot of your motherboard or laptop.
- A faster interface only helps if the slot supports it: a PCIe 5.0 drive runs at PCIe 4.0 speed in a 4.0 slot.
- Choose capacity before speed: filter Capacity to what you need, then compare.
- DRAM cache and endurance (TBW) separate drives at the same speed; both are filters.

What matters for game and file storage
For a game library, capacity and price per terabyte matter more than a flagship sequential-speed label. A good PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive already removes most storage bottlenecks in normal play; spend on 2TB or 4TB only when you will use the space. The Value ranking keeps price meaningful, so a premium 8TB model does not become a default recommendation merely because it is larger.
- Capacity you will use
- 2TB is a practical main-library target; 4TB is sensible for a large installed collection, not an automatic upgrade.
- Price per capacity
- A larger drive should earn its place by keeping cost per terabyte competitive, not by capacity alone.
- PCIe 4.0 baseline
- Modern NVMe bandwidth is already ample for game loading; Gen5 is useful only when the price gap is small or another workload needs it.
- Filter before ranking
- Set the minimum capacity and form factor first, then compare Value among drives that actually fit the build.
Check for yourself
- Choose capacity first: games are large, and filling a drive costs more than buying the next size up.
- Check Interface and Form factor against your slot; SATA drives fit a different connector than M.2 NVMe.
- For a second, games-only drive, a PCIe 3.0 or 4.0 drive is a sensible step down from the system drive.
- Compare price per terabyte through Value with the Game & File Storage priority.

What matters for a system drive on a tight budget
Budget storage starts with the capacity you genuinely need, then minimizes total checkout price without discarding basic speed and endurance. A tiny drive can lead an unrestricted bargain list because it costs less, so use the capacity filter before buying. For a new primary drive, mainstream PCIe 4.0 NVMe is usually the practical baseline; SATA remains useful when the machine cannot accept NVMe.
- Required capacity first
- Filter to 1TB, 2TB or your actual floor so a cheaper undersized drive cannot answer the wrong question.
- Total price
- Budget Value deliberately favors the lower checkout cost once the drive meets your capacity requirement.
- Interface fit
- Prefer NVMe where the board supports it; keep SATA in view for older systems and spare 2.5-inch bays.
- Warranty & TBW
- Use endurance and warranty to break close price ties, not to justify a huge premium.
Check for yourself
- This view is limited to drives at or under the budget line; the Price filter shows it.
- Check Interface and Form factor against your slot before anything else.
- On a budget, capacity usually matters more than peak speed for a system drive.
- DRAM cache is a filter: drives without it are cheaper and slower when they fill up.

Questions
Which SSD fits my PC right now?
Check the slot first (M.2 NVMe or SATA). Under each job's priorities and today's prices, the highest Value is Crucial T710 2TB as a system drive, TeamGroup MP44Q 4TB for game storage and Patriot P320 256GB on a budget.
Why does each list ask for a different grade?
Because each job asks more of the hardware. The grade is read from specifications without price; a product below the line would fall short for that job, so it is left out of that list however cheap it is.
How current are the prices?
Prices come from current offers in this market; each offer shows when it was last checked, in your time zone. Offers that stop appearing stay listed as last seen and never count toward Value or rankings.
