Best CPUs for Gaming

Current shortlists for a new build and for each platform you may already own — AM5, LGA 1851, AM4 and LGA 1700 — plus a budget list. Each keeps processors that reach the gaming capability for that list and have a current offer, ordered by Value under gaming priorities.

How these lists are built

  • A current new offer in CanadaValue needs today's price. Models without a current offer are graded in the CPU tier list.
  • Each list has its own requirement and prioritiesShown under its heading: the capability grade a product must reach for that job and the priorities its Value uses. A product can qualify for one list and not another.

What matters for gaming

Gaming performance is dominated by single-thread speed and cache — not core count. AMD's X3D parts hold the top of this ranking because the stacked cache feeds high-refresh frame rates that raw clocks cannot match. Match the CPU to your GPU tier and resolution: at 4K almost any modern 6–8 core CPU keeps up, while 1080p/1440p high-refresh play is exactly where paying for an X3D or top single-thread part returns real FPS.

Gaming index
Our gaming score weighs single-thread and cache-sensitive performance — the FPS predictor.
Cache (X3D)
3D V-Cache parts routinely beat higher-clocked CPUs in games; it's the main reason the top rows look the way they do.
Platform cost
AM5/LGA1851 board + DDR5 can add CAD 150+ over an older-socket bargain — judge the platform, not the chip alone.
Upgrade path
AM5 has committed future generations; a dead-end socket needs a bigger discount to win.

Check for yourself

  1. Choose your platform first: if you already own a motherboard, lock Socket to it — a cheaper processor for another socket is not an option.
  2. For a new build, compare across sockets but remember the price here is the processor alone; the motherboard and memory cost differ by platform.
  3. Check Memory type: a DDR5-only platform needs DDR5 memory.
  4. Compare the Gaming grade before Value: at the same grade, Value then shows which price is better for what you get.

What matters for a gaming PC on a tight budget

The budget CPU market is where older sockets shine: an AM4 or LGA1700 chip with a cheap board and DDR4 often delivers the best complete-platform price. Integrated graphics deserve real weight here — an iGPU part covers you between GPU purchases or in an office build. Mind the upgrade context: the cheapest chip on a dead platform can cost more later.

Platform total
Board + RAM + CPU is the real number; last-gen sockets usually win it.
iGPU option
G-series / non-F parts save a whole GPU purchase in office and HTPC builds.
Enough cores
6C/12T is the current comfortable floor for a general-purpose build.
Used/refurb toggle
Office-pull CPUs are abundant and cheap — check conditions in the calculator.

Check for yourself

  1. This view is limited to processors at or under the budget line; the Price filter shows it.
  2. Lock Socket to the platform you will use: on a budget the motherboard is a large share of the cost.
  3. Check Integrated graphics if you will start without a graphics card.
  4. A C grade for gaming is the minimum here; it pairs with a budget graphics card.

Questions

Which processor fits a gaming PC right now?

It depends on the platform. Under gaming priorities and today's prices, the highest Value is Ryzen 7 9850X3D for a new build, Ryzen 7 9850X3D on AM5, Intel Core Ultra 5 250KF Plus on LGA 1851, AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT on AM4 and Intel Core i7-14700 on LGA 1700. On a tight budget: Intel Core Ultra 5 225F.

Why does each list ask for a different grade?

Because each job asks more of the hardware. The grade is read from specifications without price; a product below the line would fall short for that job, so it is left out of that list however cheap it is.

How current are the prices?

Prices come from current offers in this market; each offer shows when it was last checked, in your time zone. Offers that stop appearing stay listed as last seen and never count toward Value or rankings.
